Biographical Sketch:
Lucy Bradford Nickerson Morris (1860-1953) was born in Duxbury, the daughter of Capt. George F. Nickerson and Lucy Bradford. She was raised in a home on Washington Street (no longer standing). In 1871, Lucy set sail aboard her father’s ship, Neriad, on a voyage to the Pacific. She went as a companion to her mother, who was ill. Her mother died during the voyage while the ship was traveling around Cape Horn. Prior to this, young Lucy had met Theodore Morris, a clerk for the China Japan Trading Company, while in Yokohama, Japan. When the Neriad’s voyage ended, Lucy returned to Japan and married Morris. Her sister, Helen, eventually joined her. Lucy and Theodore Morris moved to California in 1901 and opened the Nippon Mura, a Japanese-style inn in Los Gatos.
