Scope and Content:
The collection contains the papers, photographs, and books related to the Capt. Stephen Soule family of Duxbury. Included are receipts for purchases made for the schooner Clarissa Howard (1839) and the schooner Traveller (1847) while they were under the command of Capt. Stephen Soule. Also included is Soule’s account book (1834-1841). The correspondence includes two letters to Capt. Stephen Soule’s brother, Capt. Elijah Soule, and two letters written to Stephen Soule’s son, Laurence Porter Soule. Photographs include two carte-de-visites of Laura Eldridge Weston and one of Alfred Weston. Also, two framed photographs of Capt. Stephen Soule and his wife, Lydia.

Biographical Information:
Capt. Stephen Soule (1792-1868) was born in Duxbury, MA, to William Soule and Priscilla Sampson. The Soules home still stands on Marshall Street (Joseph Soule House, dateboard file). In 1816 he married Lydia Pierce (1799-1877), the daughter of Luther Pierce and Lydia Delano. Together the Soules had ten children: Luther (b. 1817), Lydia (b. 1819), William (b. 1819), Catherine (b. 1822), Louise (b. 1825), Maria (b. 1827), Laurence (b. 1831), Fernando (b. 1833), Priscilla (b. 1836), and Oscar (b. 1840).
