Biographical Information:

Mary Nye Gifford (1866-1958) was born in Duxbury, MA to Stephen Nye Gifford and Ada Winsor Gifford. Although Mary frequently spent time in Boston, she primarily spent her entire life living in Duxbury. Mary Nye Gifford never married, and became involved in various organizations in town, including the Ladies Union Fair Association. Ms. Gifford was the first treasurer of the Duxbury Rural and Historical society, and she collected a large amount of genealogical information and historical papers on behalf of the society.

Stephen Nye Gifford (1815-1886) was born in Pembroke, MA to Paul Gifford and Mary Sampson Gifford. As a young man Mr. Gifford was a schoolteacher and, eventually established a private academy at Duxbury. In 1853 Stephen Nye Gifford married Florence Winsor who, in 1859, died giving birth to their son Stephen Wentworth Gifford. In 1861 he married Florence’s younger sister, Ada Winsor. Ada and Stephen had three children, Mary Nye Gifford, born in 1866, Paul Winsor Gifford, born in 1868, and Carlton Sprague Gifford, born in 1876.

In 1850 the people of Duxbury chose Mr. Gifford to represent them in the Massachusetts State House of Representatives. In 1851 he was appointed Inspector in the Boston Custom House, and in 1855 he was chosen to supply a vacancy in the office of State Auditor. In 1855 and 1857 he served as assistant clerk of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, and in 1858 he became Clerk of the Senate, holding that post for 28 years until his death in 1886.
