SCOPE & CONTENT:
The Cushman Family Collection spans three generations of the Cushman and Hall families of Duxbury, MA. The bulk of the Collection consists of correspondence to Lucie (Hall) Cushman between 1877-1942 and also to her daughter, Lura Oakes Cushman from 1896 -1986. Lucie was the daughter-in-law of Capt. David Cushman and lived in the Cushman estate on the Blue Fish River in Duxbury. Also included are nine Standard diaries of Lucie (Hall) Cushman from 1883-1891and two belonging to her aunt, Lucie (Ripley) Weston, 1883 and 1893. These diaries give glimpses into the day-to-day lives of women in the late 19th century in Duxbury.  Lura Oakes Cushman’s appointment, address and account books are also included. The Collection contains a substantial amount of ephemera collected by both Lucie and Lura, including calling cards, advertisements and brochures. Of special note is the material Lura Oakes Cushman saved from her participation in the Pilgrim Tercentenary (1921) and her scrapbook of Duxbury invitations, programs, etc., 1915-196

The papers of Capt. David Cushman, Jr. include correspondence from 1838-1842, cargo books (1830-1845), and various accounts, receipts and invoices. There are copies of his log books for the Prospero, King Fisher and Delphos, the originals are not in the possession of the DRHS. The collection also contains the papers of his father, David Cushman, Sr., a blacksmith in Duxbury.

The papers of Horace Sampson, the son-in-law of Capt. David Cushman, includes Civil War correspondence to him from his father, Eden Sampson, and various others; Civil War orders; and pension paperwork. Also included in this series is a photograph of Horace and Mary Cushman, the daughter of Capt. David Cushman.

The papers of Daniel Sampson, the step-son of Capt. David Cushman, includes seven letters by Eugene Sampson between 1849-1852. These letters are particularly interesting both for their humor and descriptions of life in Boston for a young man in the 1840s. This series also contains a copy of his father’s (Capt.. Daniel Sampson) journal.

There are series for other members of the Cushman/Hall family, including Lucie (Hall) Cushman’s brothers, Samuel J. Hall, George P. Hall and Parker J. Hall.

Her husband, Walter F. Cushman (1852-1915), was born in Duxbury and was a first cousin to Lucie’s mother, Ardelia Ripley. He was employed as a mechanic and boat builder. He lived his entire life in at the Cushman estate on Anchorage Lane.

From 1921-1922 she studied for her teaching degree at Framingham Teacher’s College and began a career in teaching home economics and cooking, including at Miss Farmer’s School of Cookery in Boston, MA, Framingham State College and Simmons College. In 1948 she studied Child Psychology at Boston University and subsequently went to work for the Household Nursing Association. During her retirement years, Lura Cushman traveled extensively around the world, her goal was to visit all the ports that her grandfather, Capt. David Cushman, Jr. had been. She was also active in the First Parish Church, the Alden Kindred and the Duxbury Rural & Historical Society. Lura Cushman inherited and lived in her family’s home until her death in 1988 at the age of 94. Her estate was donated to the Wildlands Trust, a land conservation organization. She is buried in Mayflower Cemetery.

He was born in Duxbury, MA where his father was a blacksmith on St. George St. As a young man he went away to sea and became a successful captain for Ezra Weston and others. His voyages took him across the Atlantic and also in Asia. In he married the widow, Mary (Alden) Sampson. Mary was a direct descendant of John and Priscilla Alden. She was born in the Alden House.
