Charles M. Smith Papers (1861-1901)

Scope and Content: The Collection includes nine letters written by Charles M. Smith to his mother while a soldier in the Civil War.

Biographical Information:  Charles M. Smith was born in Charlestown, MA in 1841 to Charles C. Smith and Hannah S. Smith.  At the age of 19 he enlisted in the Union Army, Company I, Massachusetts Infantry.  He was mustered out on June 24, 1864.  After the war he moved to Humbolt, KS.  He was married to Anna (b. Ohio) and had four children, all born in Kansas: Ella (b. abt. 1870); Abby (b. abt. 1871); Charles F. (b. abt. 1877); and Edwin (b. abt. 1879).  Charles M. Smith worked as a carpenter and architect.  He died after 1930.
